Seen several bad solenoids also that go clunk.
The real old types could be taken apart and internal parts reversed or relocated as a rebuild.
Keep as heads up when replacing the solenoid because
some of the small engine solenoids are termed ISOLATED base. (isolated base type solenoids are used when safety switches are involved)
The solenoid coil terminals are not connected (isolated) to the metal mounting base.
