When turning the starter solonoid goes clunk but starter wont spin. I can jump the 2 posts on the starter solonoid to get the starter to spin. I can jump the starter directly and will spin. Thinking bad starter solonoid. What your thoughts?

Seems pretty obvious - what are your doubts?

Seen quite a few here...Burned internal contacts or plastic housing melt to a point prevents one of the two contacts from closing completely. All it is a moving copper bar completing the electrical path between stationary contacts (the large copper bolts). I even seen a couple that would engage and then fail to disengage because of melted housing.

Seen several bad solenoids also that go clunk.
The real old types could be taken apart and internal parts reversed or relocated as a rebuild.

Keep as heads up when replacing the solenoid because some of the small engine solenoids are termed ISOLATED base. (isolated base type solenoids are used when safety switches are involved)

The solenoid coil terminals are not connected (isolated) to the metal mounting base.

Replaced solonoid and still nothing. Its picking better connection when jumping the 2 posts on the solonoid. I guess the key switch is bad too.

PO tried using black silcone to keep the copper studs on the one battery side post on the solonoid and the stud was bent also.

That sounds like one here that tried JB Welding a head bolt.

Dave you got two safety switches between the ignition switch and solenoid relay. They are the PTO and Brake/Clutch switches. You should have the battery voltage on the orange wire from the ignition switch when it is in start position though these switches. You could also a faulty electrical connection where the voltage is dropping due poor connections.

Do you have the wiring diagram? Or do you need a copy sent to you for that 42" Yard King?
