Tecumseh engine problem

Postby Bix49 » Sun Jan 19, 2014 8:02 pm

Hello,
I just joined because I'm having a problem and I have learned more from these forums than anywhere else. My problem concerns a 4y/o Craftsman snowblower powered by a 5.5hp Tecumseh engine. I've tried for a couple days to find an answer with no luck. The engine won't start. This year during it's first use it began stalling for no apparent reason. It would restart easily until the last time and now I can't get it started to save my life. I got it into the basement, pulled the carb and cleaned it. It was pretty clean and there were no big deposits. There was gas in the float bowl. I bought a new sparkplug, checked it and there is good spark. I did find a metal rod about the diameter of a clothes hanger wrapped around the drive shaft and removed it. Compression seems to be good, Oil level good. the auger turns when the handle is engaged and you attempt to start it. The wheels engage as well. Yesterday I got a couple pops and it sounded like the engine wanted to start. Today nothing. Starting fluid makes no difference. I can clean the carb again but other than that I'm at a loss. Can anyone help me out with some suggestions. I really would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Bix

If you can please post your equipment model number and if have the engine model and spec that would help in troubleshooting the problem.

For now you have pretty well eliminated the carburetor as the problem since it will not start even with starter fluid.

With metal wrapped around the driveshaft you might just have a sheared flywheel key causing the ignition timing to far off for it to run. There are other can this problem but I would check the key first.

Okay, the model number of the machine is 247.883550. Craftsman 24" electric start snow thrower Some information I did find were owners who seem to agree that this is the worst snow blower in the history of snow blowers. The model number of the Tecumseh engine is I believe:LH1955A/LH1195SP

Craftsman parts indicates Tecumseh LH195SP-67514 engine use on on your blower. So we now know it is a 4 cycle engine. As previously stated check the flywheel key. Depending on the age of the engine it can be also needing the valves adjusted. It going take some troubleshooting to narrow down the problem and the users of this forum can suggest various checks for you to do. It will take some time as it is harder to diagnose the problem when the engine is not in front of us.

Now if I can just find a service manual on the LH195SP.

Did you clean the hole in the bolt holding the bowl on? Willing to bet 80% of these I have seen have crud in these holes.
In fact...it only took a second to find a picture...

I wanted to ask that whether i can use the old 4y engine in my toyota forklift.. I am facing some problem in the engine of my forklift.. So, instead of buying new one i was thinking to install the old 4y engine only..

Hey Tony

To get answers to your question, You need to tell what engine you have in the fork lift (including engine numbers) and the numbers on the 4yo engine you want to install.
And to add to this...you need to start a new thread to keep from being over looked and put the added info in the new thread.
Otherwise its like saying how long is a piece of string?
