Homelite S-8 snowblower belts

Postby jwales » Mon Dec 23, 2013 9:55 pm

I have an early 70's Homelite S-8 snow blower. Has a B&S 8 hp. Runs good have replaced muffler, head gasket, rewind and rebuilt the carb over the last 3 years. My Dad was the original owner. Not sure if he ever replaced the belts but they are due now! Of course I can't find either. I understand simplicity made the unit. The 2 belt numbers I have LM-01610-98 (auger) and LM-01743-23 (drive). I tred a couple cross reference belt sites and these numbers don't show up. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
Thanks, joe

Hi J

According to the Stens Reference guide, both numbers sub up. The auger belt #161098 is ½" x 39" and the trans drive belt #174323 is 3/8" x 61". The Stens number for the auger belt is 248-039 but no Stens number is given for the trans belt. I checked my suppliers on line check stock option on these part numbers and got the message "Not allowed to buy this part" probably because this blower was never certified for the Canadian market.

Anyhow, hope this information helps point you in the right direction. All the best,

Sky

This link shows the Simplicity belt numbers and sizes. Unfortunately, only the LM-01610-98 belt shows as a 1/2" x 39" (4L390).
The LM-01743-23 shows as ????. Take the belts to most any auto store and they could measure them with their belt gage.Hope this helps.

Gates x references:

161098 to 6839 (1/2 X 39") 4L390 (Gates also has the non power-rated belt 2390)

174323 to 6761 (3/8 X 61") 3L610 (Gates also has the non power-rated belt 1610)

Good luck.

Hi again

Forgot to mention, you may want to look at getting a raw edge belt for the auger drive belt. Kevlar wraped belts tend to slip when wet and moisture abounds when you're blowing snow. All the best,
