Kohler Breather

Postby dennis » Tue Jan 28, 2014 3:24 pm

I just adjusted the valves on a Kohler Courage 20HP engine. Model SV600S, Spec SV600-0225.

I wanted to check the breather to make sure it was working properly, but can't tell. The breather is in the rocker arm (valve) cover. Inside, there is a thin metal diaphragm on one side of the V-shaped cover, and in the center of the bottom of the V there is a small (1/16-1/8" hole). On the outside is the rubber hose that goes to the carburetor. I tried blowing and sucking on hose, and get air both ways. However, there is a lot of volume inside that cover, so I don't know if my "test" is worth anything. Any suggestions for telling if the breather is ok? Thanks.

Pretty much just a visual inspection of the reed to ensure it is in place and poke it lightly with a screwdriver to make sure it moves freely and isn't stuck shut and returns to closed. It's a thin piece of spring steel, basically.

Then just make sure the drain hole is clear and will allow oil to drain back into the engine.

Other than that no real way to test it for operation - its a very simple non-adjustable thing.

Also remember that the vacuum happens so fast that sucking on the hose really won't tell you a lot.
