governor

Postby hal5778 » Tue Jan 28, 2014 6:14 pm

Hello I have a Generac generator with a 10hp Tecumseh Model # HM100. My question is concerning the governor when the motor is started up the rpms seem to be extremely high and when a load is put on the unit the rpms do not seem to change. I always thought that the unit should when started idle at a low rpm and as a load is put on it the governor would regulate the increase in rpms as needed. Someone told me that the motor had a fixed governor which I don't understand this at all. If the governor should work as a rpm regulator than that's what I need to know so I can have it repaired

Not for generators. Most generators run at a fixed speed no load around 3750 RPM to achieve 60Hz output under load (3600 RPM/60 = 60Hz) - Some such as diesel generators and other 4-pole gensets may run at 1875 RPM1 top no load (1800 RPM/30 = 60Hz) SOME generators, usually the pricier ones , may have an "auto Idle" feature to idle down the generator when there's no load, but even those will run top no load at start up until auto idle kicks in.

The governor should work to MAINTAIN that top no load RPM (you need a tach at minimum, or better, a Kill-A-Watt meter or multimeter that can measure frequency in Hz) but it should not exceed it. If measuring Hz, you want it to be around 62 Hz unloaded, so when it takes on a load, it drops to around 60hz

If the generator is working properly for power output and generation, then there's nothing much to fix.

This is good information and the Kill-A-Watt meter was very popular on the old forum to check generators. Included is a link with a picture to one on Amazon - bper ;)
