Peerless 205-026 transaxle issue

I have a AYP tractor with the above referenced transaxle in it. I moved the tractor a few days ago and cut it off. Walking away I heard a 'ping' that sounded like something hit a piece of tin. Later when I tried to move the tractor the hydrostatic drive appears locked in both forward and reverse possible...at least when I move the level either for forward or reverse there is a grinding. If I depress the clutch/brake I can move it into a gear and if I begin to release the clutch it drags the engine down. The tractor will not roll without skipping one wheel backward as the other moves forward even with the lockout in the position to push it.
Any help identifying the problem would be appreciated. Thanks.

Please the model number of your lawn tractor so we can look-up the transmission. Most of these hydro static transmission are consider non-repairable as parts are not available separately. You best bet is probably obtaining an used one from a local shop in your area. Just my opinion btw.

If ya READ the title of his post, he says it's a peerless 205-026.

You need to check all the linkages to the brake, shift lever, etc., I would take a look at the brake itself, may have something jammed in the mechanism. As was mentioned, could be time for a new unit.

Yes understood it was 205-026 which is hydro static version which I did look-up, just to offer the AYP replacement part number if the OP want a new instead of a new transmission.

From their description sound like something left go in the trans. A linkage or getting jammed don't usually go ping when you walk away. More likely something was overheated.

The first thing to check would be the brake return spring, springs do make that noise when they break.If it broke, the brake will remain locked which will cause the symptoms you described. If not that, good luck.

Thanks to all of you who responded to my plight.
Especially to mwerls who pointed me to the brakes.
The spring is okay, but they had just hung instead of releasing...I guess a little lubricant might have been smart since this thing's been sitting since my father died about 8 years ago...my bad.
Thanks again to everyone. I appear to be back in business...at least I can roll it now so it appears to be free. I'll run test it later.
