Clone and other inexpensive engines

I did make a search for previous related threads.

Harbor freight use to carry Chicago and now carry Predator engines. They are a clone of the Honda engines. They are sold dirt cheap. However, I recently found DuroMax. They sell a 16 HP engine for $299, very inexpensive. They also have good reviews. This sparked some interest.

Does anybody know of other dirt cheap engine brands and where to get them? Even if only online?
Are there any cheap diesels or V-Twins out there?

I'd be interested to here of other brands.

Just my opinion...

Personally I am not a sell out to the Chinese. Parts are harder to come by and don't always work even you can get them as they change them at random at least me it has been the case. Durability, reliability and is repairable later is what I look for in engine.

An 16 hp engine for 299.00 won't get any major repairs in my shop due to labor and parts costs so it be an use it and throwaway engine. When is the consumer going to learn that being too cheap will bite you in end?

There are as many brands as there are companies or people with the money to import them and slap a label on them, ensure they are EPA certified, and set up distribution channels.

If YOU had enough money, You could buy from the same chinese manufacturer that makes HP Predator, design your own brand and labels, slap 'em on and you'd have your very own line of cheap engines to sell.. Youth ATVs as little as $99 each you can flip and sell for $600 - $1000... mini bikes, scooters.. honda clones.. diesels.. heck you can design your own lawnmower if you want and slap a private label on the engines.. Just like MTD, Husqvarna, Briggs, Kohler, and many other manufacturers have been doing for the past 5 to 10 years. They pretty much all come from the same 2 or 3 factories in china, just that some manufacturers have higher QC Standards so the end product that goes to the consumer is a more consistent quality, rather than the "crapshoot" when you buy a cheapo knock-off such as the Predator, where Quality Control is a foreign word - they just slap em together as fast as they can and if they fire up, they get boxed and shipped.

You really get what you pay for...and good online reviews on seller site can be edited to weed out the bad ones and fake ones posted too.

Then what is the point of needing the information? Do you need the information for a school project or something?

I can tell your a very logical person. If there is no apparent need for the information then why do you need it. So, here it is. Later on I might be powering a small project, homemade generator, or even maybe a golf cart or something. I am not sure of what right now just want to do a project involving a small engine. It will be something fast, cheap, and I really just need a cheap engine.

So the point of this post is just information gathering, just to see what's out there. So that being said, anybody know of a vtwin or even a diesel?
