Briggs Spark Plug Help

Postby dennis » Thu Apr 10, 2014 4:29 pm

I have a Briggs and Stratton twin cylinder Mod. 446777 Type 0246-E1 Code 021212YG01545 engine on a Craftsman lawn tractor.

The Craftsman owners manual says it takes a Champion QC12YC spark plug. Supposedly, the Champion RC12YC plug is an acceptable substitute because it crosses with the Briggs 491055S plug that is shown in the IPL for this engine. I have heard that the QC plug should be used so as not to cause problems with the ignition system. I just called Briggs and when I told them what engine I had, they said the RC plug was ok to use. There is a big difference in the price of a OC plug vs an RC plug. I am confused, because I could have sworn that at one time Briggs said only to use the OC plug. What do you folks think about this????

Your engine doesn't appear to EFI fuel injection so the RC12YC should be fine. It is EFI systems that they worried about electro-magnetic pulses affecting.
