coleman generator air filter too large

Postby pawandmaw » Thu Apr 10, 2014 9:00 pm

I have a model195432 type 074401 briggs 8hp, the new air filter Is about a 1/4 taller than the old one. The cover now lets the 1/4 of air filter exposed on the bottom around the cover, what effects will this have on the engine when it runs. I got air filter number 393957s, was there a different number for this, I looked it up and the shop I bought it from both found that air filter number and this was the replacement number.

the above link is the :usa: same carb. with out the air cover.
Thanks for your help

As long as it's sealed at the top & bottom it will work fine. Briggs parts lookup: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/us/en/ ... als/engine
You do know the date code is needed for the correct ID of a lot of BS parts, right?

The engine numbers you provide show a completely different filter system.

With being a Coleman generator they may have used a slightly different filter. Do have the generator numbers? Also if you still have the old filter, what is inside, outside and height dimensions and what was it original part number?

I was using my vendors parts look-up for the type given which a totally different filter and wa just trying narrow things down. BTW there is K&N filter that fits that a different set of specs too.

But I give up...........

The height on the outside of the OLD filter is 3- 5/8, the width across outside to outside is 4 3/16, this inside id is 2 1/16
Thanks

Don't if this helps much but here is the air filter dimensions that I found. It looks like the Stens K&N version is the closest the above specs, except the ID 5/16 larger. You will still have the 1/8 height issue so check your assembly of the air filter unit. It might just be an assembly issue or it might take changing the air filter intake mount to a different version from a donor engine.

If your issue is just with the out of air filter being exposed a little but the inside portion is seal tightly you should be fine. It will be just bottom portion could get wet easily.

Note: Inside ID is the air filter intake mounting hole.

BRIGGS & STRATTON 390492
Specifications: ID: 1 5/16"
OD: 3 13/16"
Height: 2 15/16"

BRIGGS & STRATTON 393957S
Specifications: ID: 1 7/8"
OD: 4 1/4"
Height: 3 3/4"

Stens 050-802
(AIR FILTER K & N E-4517)
Specifications: ID: 2 3/8"
OD: 4 3/8"
Height: 3 3/4"

Note: The K&N E-4517 was designed to increase horsepower while providing excellent filtration and is washable and reusable .
