Powermate Generator not generating

Postby plpitts1 » Wed Apr 16, 2014 11:24 am

Hello,
I have a Powermate 5000, with a Subaru motor EX300D520117196. The motor runs great, but it generates no power. The numbers on the generator are PM0435001. I pulled the box off that has all the plugs and breakers in it and tested with ohms meter, all seems ok. I’ve not used a multimeter much, but I have a good one. I went to a small engine class a while back and they kinda breezed over it. I am not sure how to check the generator part. I started at the plug (runs from generator to electrical box) with the engine running with the multimeter on AC. I did not come up with any readings. On the end of the cap/cover of the generator is a small door, which contains too quick disconnect plugs, tested with Multimeter on AC, got nothing. I pulled the cap/cover off of the end of the generator, but not sure what to test. The brushes look good. On the back of the cover is a green plate that 2 wires run to that also hold the brushes. On top of the windings are the 5 wires (2wht,2blk,1grn) that go to the electrical box. I kinda know what I’m looking at, but not enough to be sure what to test. Do not know how to check the windings. Hope this makes since.
Thanks,
Pat

Got a variable speed reversible drill , corded? Try flashing the genset -

Get it running, plug in the drill, set switch on reverse (or forward, Ive found it doesnt really matter), squeeze drill trigger, and then, grasp the chuck (careful, not too tight, if it starts and takes off, it can hurt!) and spin the drill by hand using the chuck as fast as you can - It generates a small electrical charge that feeds back to the generator, which restores just enough magnetism that the generator starts producing power. brushed generators need to be able to store residual magnetism in the windings in order to start producing power. They can lose that residual magnetism from various causes including rough handling, impact, long term storage, lightning strike, arc welding on or near the unit, and other causes.

Thanks for the quick reply, but that did not work. Looking at what I've already done, Is this something that YOU would call dead, or is this something I should spend a little time with, or I haven't done the right testing??
thanks,
Pat

I'm not a generator guy - but there's a few that come around here now and then.. There is also Smokestak forums where they have a lot of generator gurus (Far as I know)

Or I can just email them to plpitts1 if he wants them for free. Just let me know.
