Small Engine Oil Filters

Do small gasoline engines have an oil filter that uses a finer mesh screen to filter the oil better, or will a regular automotive filter that fits work just as well? A guy asked me that question and I wasn't sure. I thought I would ask you guys rather than tell him something that might be wrong.

I haven't really got the what the microns are on the filters but I do know that engines have different pressure pass settings for filters and and some have anti-drain back features depending on the application. I just was just looking around at filter for a Briggs Vanguard engine last week and that it required the anti-drain back and had only about a 7 PSI bypass valve in case the filter became clogged. I had a generic filter in stock along with the correct filter and the second generic had 11 PSI bypass. It would best to stick with what the OEM specify for their equipment even if it is a generic type of filter. I would rather be safe than sorry later.

you can cross reference oil filters by part numbers but i would not stray from manufacturers spec requirements. you are not limited to oil filter manufacturer, its ridiculous to only use oe only filters, the engine manufacturer doesnt make filters, filter companies make them. find the direct replacement for whatever filter you need and buy it. micron rating, adbv and by-pass pressure settings are important!!

It has already been stated that you should be very careful to use a filter that matches the original filter on any engine, also be aware that in some cases a pattern part can actually cost more than a genuine part.
I recently struggled to find filters to suit a small Kubota Diesel, our local filter stockist could only offer to order in filters for me. I needed the filters the next day so I dropped in at a Kubota dealership nearby where they were ex stock and at less cost than I had been quoted for pattern parts, so buyer beware.

This is exactly how I came across one of my aftermarket suppliers but it was a local JD dealer that I had buy parts from anyway as the customer was in a rush. Never could see why he was in such a rush, it took him 2 weeks after the repair just to pick-up the mower. I do owe him and the JD dealer lots of thanks for putting me on to supplier that is usually one or two day part delivery wise and the great thing they just added Briggs to their line-up with an one day delivery in warehouse parts at better price than I had been paying before with an one week delivery.

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated. I will tell him he can use a different filter, but he should make certain to use one that matches the specifications of the OEM filter. If he doesn't do that, then the potential exists for causing premature failure of the engine.

I'm wondering how 1 aftermarket filter can cross to 14 different Kawasaki filters. If the Kawasaki are the same why different numbers? Or is each one an improvement over the previous and the aftermarket matches the latest?

Some of the numbers were superseded but the one in red.

490652001- 490652070 were superseded to 490652070

490652071 is an oil filter screen and not the same as 490652070 and definitely not an oil filter cartridge.



490652074 was superseded to 490652071

490652078 was superseded to 490657010

Don't know about 75,76, or 77.
