Hmmm that's an idea. I have had a couple engines in here where the starters were replaced by other techs. They had got the kill wire pinch between the starter casing and and the crankcase. One would only give problems when the engine was hot enough to soften the insulation on the wire allowing enough electrical contact to give problems.

Well, I don't know how to explain it...but I did lap the exhaust valve, the intake valve looked good so I left well enough alone. Initially it ran fine and then it started the popping, etc. So I cursed some and scratched my head while I walked in the house to look at this forum for any suggestions. The kill wire suggestion...I disconnected it and initially it popped once, but after I disconnected it I didn't hear it again. I even reconnected it and it didn't do it again. Thank you all, I appreciate it. If it rears its ugly head again, I will get anther wire for it. Thanks all again. :usa:

Bad news...one lap around yard and it started again. Must have been a premature judgement call on my end. Sorry for that. But the kill wire will definitely be filed away for future knucklehead engines I get in. I am thinking at this point that maybe my lapping job wasn't quite enough. Nonetheless, I took it back to the owner with apologies with no charge. They said they were surprised I got it running at all since I got it and it gives'em a reason to get a new mower with the understanding of how to take care of one a little better than this red-headed stepchild they brought me... :)

Neighbor's was doing the same thing until I backed off the jet 1/8 turn...he couldn't believe a 15 second fix.
