HS50 Carb Rebuild Kit Question

Howdy

Snowblower Snapper model I5240 (that is an 'eye' not a 1) serial 74558323
Tecumseh Engine has some of the ID rusted to being unreadable. Here is what I can make out: HS50 67 _ 6 _ G SER 7140 B

I researched partstree and found 25 pages of different numbers, but only 6 ending with 'G'. My guess is this engine is a 67136G or 67161G.

The engine only runs with 3/4 choke. I plan to to an ultrasonic carb clean, and install a new kit.

Based on what part of the engine numbers we know, can you tell me what carb kit I need? Can you take a guess at the age of the engine?

Heres what ya do: go back to partstree and enter your engine numbers, then , find the carb part #, then GOOGLE the carb part #. Pick the right one, and you will be rewarded with the rebuild kit number!
Kits usually cover several carb numbers. Just Google

Probably is a HS50-67266G

The I5240 (86518) came with a 5 HP Tecumseh HSSK50-67266H per Briggs Website.

Your numbers and the above all use the same kit Tecumseh 31840.

Mid 80's would be a guess to the age owners manual for the snowblower was last revised 3/86. Could be either a 77 or 87; first of serial indicates which decade the engine was built in.

Hey Deere2me, thanks for teaching me to fish on partstree. Not having the full engine number, I did your process on several of my best guess engine numbers.
They each pointed to Carb # 631923. Just as KEV4AVB specified, the rebuild kit is 31840.

KE4AVB, I keyed you're suggested engine number (which is every bit as valid as my guesses, perhaps even more so) into partstree too.
That one comes up with a different carb # 640084B, which uses kit 632760B.

This is where I depend on you guys with experience. Is there something specific I can look on the carburetor for tell if it is #631923 or #640084B ?

Here is a link to decipher the casting numbers on the mounting flange. Picture on left side shows casting number 1432 and crosses over to a Tecumseh part number of 632334A. I hope this helps.

thanks grunt, that is great. I will take a look at the casting when I get home tonight. That should lock it down for me.

Pay attention to the nozzle upper O ring. Make sure you get it out. Sometimes it will stick in the nozzle bore and ya gotta use a small flat blade screwdriver to scrape it out. I always lube all the O rings and bowl seal, as well as the needle seat, with a dab o grease.
