Hooking throttle cable to Predator Engine for Mclane Reel

Postby jimmyfingers » Fri May 09, 2014 12:09 pm

My mechanic claims it is too short. Where can I get a longer one?

Is a possible to buy a new throttle cabe that is longer?

One guy mentioned getting some a new proper length cable with standard conduit and inner wire, but I don't know what to buy

There some MTD versions that are long than 40" liner 42" cable that is probably on you your Mclane but it will take modification to the mounting area for the control box to fit. So measure the current cable is it a lot short than the 40" liner (remenber some of the liner is inside the control box) then you just get a replacement box for the Mclane; otherwise, get an aftermarket version that and make the needed mods...

Here are the specs for the Mclane Throttle
Conduit Length 40"
Inner wire Length 42"
Wire Travel: 1-5/8"

The mower will still work even with the short cable correct? I will jut have to bend down to choke and change speeds

Yes but will require relocating the control box and cable.

I haven't the McLane control box so I don't it is assembled so you may or may not be to just replace conduit and inner wire with a longer one. You could as suggest get a MTD control box and cable. With these you need to modify the current mounting area but will keep more inline with the current throttle design setup. Stens 295-406 throttle control box and handle and the Stens 290-455 control cable (45-1/2 Conduit, 47-4/5 inner wire) or an Oregon 46-323 cable (51-1/2 Conduit, 53-1/2 wire) should work. With longer cable you can cut the conduit to length after the inner wire is removed. Then reinsert the inner wire cut to desired length and add back the z-bend that was cut off to start with. Of course depending on the Predator is mounted you may not need to do anything to cable.

is your existing control head (the part with the lever) made of metal, and is the outer cable conduit accessible? If so, see how the conduit is held in to the control head , There are some, almost always the metal ones, where you can just pick up a coil of conduit and inner wire, and cut to length your own custom cable (or find a shop or hardware store than has the bulk conduit and cable in stock.) - I still have about 25 feet left over of a roll of conduit and inner wire that we got several years ago...

Be sure to leave the ends straight and pull the inner back when cutting the outer...

The existing control head is mad of plastic. I am thinking I can just buy Oregon 46-323 cable (51-1/2 Conduit, 53-1/2 wire). Take off the old throttle cable from the control box and replace it with the new one. What do you think?

Get that cable and cut it down so you don't have ten inches of extra cable to deal with.

I measured and was about 5 inches short. This is how the throttle control looks. Any suggestions on a throttle cable? Can this throttle be removed and replaced? The last pic show where the throttle will be placed. It looks like I need the same diameter cable to fit that little thing at the control box, but cant find any info on what diameter it is
