Weed Eater Hedge trimmer gets hot then stalls??

Postby snowmanhat » Wed Jun 11, 2014 7:11 am

Hi - new to this site,

I have the 22" Excalabur Weed Eater hedge trimmer (2-cycle) which runs fine for about 3-5 minutes and them runs irregular and then stops. Once the trimmer is cool it will do the same again and again.

The unit is about 2 years old with plenty of fresh gas and about 15 hours total use.

What do you suggest I look to first?

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Check the gas cap/vent. Could be not venting properly. Crack the cap a bit and let it run, if OK then ya know its the vent system.
Or it could be a bad coil. Check for spark right after it quits runnin': pull plug and check for spark using a tester if ya got one.
Prolly one or the other. Could also be a bad carb or a partially blocked fuel filter, or mushy fuel hoses.

Agree with Deere2me - but I would vote Gas cap or tank vent most likely culprit - if a bad coil, they'll usually quit like flipping a switch, no irregular running.

Note I did say *usually* - Could also potentially be a bad plug, restricted exhaust, or loose jug bolts or crankcase cover screws.
