Kohler starter issue

Postby JandL » Sat Jul 05, 2014 12:01 pm

I have a Cub Cadet with a Kohler SV590-0220 engine in it. The starter motor gear engages the flywheel and the motor does NOT turn, just the starter shaft spins the gear on the starter does not turn. Is this starter gear system rebuildable or do I need to replace the entire starter. It looks to be the original starter.

Considering the replacement of just the starter bendix (20 755 12-S) costs around $85 you will probably find replacing the starter best deal as an aftermarket version can cost as little $55 + shipping. PN for starter is 20 098 10-S. Just something similar with a Kawasaki starter where the solenoid costed more than a complete aftermarket starter.

Here is an EBay search for the starter. I personally have found asking my local dealers to get parts for my Kohler motor very frustrating. I also only buy from EBay sellers with very good reviews.
