Briggs inteck 22hp need help

Postby cookie30 » Sun Jul 06, 2014 5:26 pm

Hello I have a Briggs 22hp inteck that will run fine until I engage my pto it spits and sputters really bad. I throttle down till it stops and then it runs fine until it gets bogged down and then I do the same thing and its fine again. I have changed all filters and plugs and adj the valves. However when I pulled the one valve cover off the bottom push rod was off the rocker arm so I put it on and adj it thinking what would fix it but it didn't, still the same however it does seem to run smother. Also when it sputters and misses real bad it puffs black smoke out the exhaust. Could i have a ring gone or something with a cam lobe? I'm hoping someone can help me out before I go tearing into the inside.

Please the model-type-suffix numbers of the engine so we look up the IPL.

Since you have adjusted the valves. How did you adjust them? Since one push rod was off did you check the valve lift as compared the other valve? Did check the plugs for fouling? Sometime a push rod can become dislodged simply from not being kept adjusted properly.

There is a couple non-invasive tests that you can do to check the cylinders. One is a compression test and the other is a leak-down test. Both help determine if you have a compression related problem.

Carburetor problems on twins can give the same symptoms as compression sometimes so we will be asking several questions to help pin point the problem.

The model # is40h777 type is 0241 e1 code is 050617yg. I checked everything with the valves and all seems good. I had been having trouble with the fuel pump so I was going to try that next. I dont think it is loosing compression but going to check it anyay. Thanks for all help and I will try to answer any you guys have.

It more than likely came off 'cause the valve stuck in the guide, NOT lack of adjustment, unless ya found the adjuster loose. Sticking valves will also cause the popping etc. One of the main causes of sticking valves is overheating.
You need to pull the shroud/s and thoroughly clean the head fins. I use a blow gun with a length of 3/16 brake line tubing soldered on to get deep into the fins.
It will prolly happen again unless you pull the heads and fix it!
Sounds like ya may have carb issues also, but ya gotta address the valves first.

update on this. I put new fuel pump on and it seemed to run better. It done it twice and that was when I first started it and then I had to cut the blades off one time and it done it then. However I had to stop again after it was warm and started them back up with no prob. I hope this has it if not Im going to go to the carb next.
