I did a kerosene soak and replaced the orings on the bowl and cleanoout button on the bottom of the bowl. I started on stopped the engine several times in the morning with no leaks. When the customer came to pick it up in the afternoon the cleanout button leaked. I had allready explained to customer that i just did a rought kerosine soak and used two gaskets for my spare parts. I did not charge him for this and explained that it wasn't a complete carb service but it did seem to work ok this morning. He asked me to look into getting a complete carb kit. The snow blower is old but in great shape. I found on Jacks small eng service kit 631793 for $83 plus $10 shipping. i have several P/N 6311978 and 632347 kits in my shop. Can I use the kits I have?
huh? $83 for a carb kit? are you kidding me? I wish I could get those prices for that kit, I'd be rich. Probably the price you were seeing was a complete carburetor.. and $83 is about right for an aftermarket one - OEM carbs are a tad bit more pricey - 80 to 120 bucks a pop - In the case of 631793, which replaces old carb 631459 OEM carb will run you about $147 , so the "kit" you found would actually be a complete carburetor assembly, aftermarket (likely Oregon or Stens) version.
If the carb is original to the engine, it should take a 31840 kit (under 15 bucks, usually) - if your only concern is the bowl drain, you would want 27136A (about 6 - 10 bucks OEM, somewhere around there, and they are available in aftermarket versions, but much harder to install due to a shorter stem)
If it runs good and just needs bowl drain kit - 27136A and bowl gaskets (631028, 27110A) you'll be far better off with those than replacing a perfectly good carburetor with an aftermarket one - Personally, I've had spotty results using aftermarket carburetors - so much so that we just won't use them unless absolutely necessary... Others have had excellent results with them, so could be I just had the bad luck to get the "bad ones" out of the distributor batch..
