Yard Machine 17hp Tecumseh identification?

Postby dart451 » Sun Aug 03, 2014 4:20 pm

Hello,

Looking to see if anyone would know how to identify the model number of a Yard Machine 17hp 42" Hydrostatic lawn tractor. I have the numbers on the Tecumseh engine, OHV17 204605B. I looked under the seat where the model number should have been but it's gone...only the sticker with MTD's phone number is there...no model number. Is there anywhere else a model number is hidden? Or am I fresh out!? I can supply pictures if needed. Appreciate any help you guys can supply me....

You can prolly Email or call MTD for help. They should be able to narrow it down using the motor info. They have a good website also.

You could try GOOGLE "Yard Machines 1742 hydro" or somethin' similar.

Thank you for the help! I will call MTD tomorrow...it actually does say on the MTD sight that they will help you try to find out what the model is if you call them. I thought most places won't give you the time of day for stuff like this!

Ok gentlemen, I was able to find the model number through MTD...they came up with it in just a few minutes! It is: 13A6695G118.

Now, hopefully one of you experts can give me a clue as to what might be happening with the transmission?? I can get the tractor to go forward but the lever will only go forward a couple inches past neutral. It goes fast but to slow it down,I have to move the lever all the way to the reverse where it slows down but will not go into reverse! I looked under the tractor (the deck is off) and cannot find anything that appears to keep the shifter from going all the way forward. I do know that when I drive the tractor...if I hit the clutch pedal all the way down, it will slow but will not stop...also the shifter becomes very stiff and you can't hardly move it forward at all. Any suggestions besides a stick of dynamite?

You know? I think I might have discovered the fix! Took off the cover in front of the seat...looks like someone turned in the barrel nut to the transmission all the way to the end...(God knows why!). I adjusted it back out and now the shifter goes all the way forward and back and the mower now goes into reverse! There is that phrase that says something like this: "keep it simple stupid!" Guess I should have checked to see if someone had played with it first!
