12.5 briggs rider

Postby dakota2 » Tue Aug 19, 2014 10:13 am

Have a 12.5 briggs rider, after running fine for about 30 minutes it then starts to cut out, spits and spudders, have to work choke
to keep it running to get back to shed. It has done this before, it runs great until it gets to this point. Let it set until next use
then same problem, run 25-30 minutes then starts again cutting out.

does it have an anti-afterfire solenoid? I'd be checking that for voltage levels (bad ground, failing solenoid, failing key switch) , also check fuel flow when the problem starts - we had one do the same thing where the fuel line just under the fuel tank had a bunch of grass and debris clogging the line restricting fuel flow. - might want to think about replacing your fuel lines from tank to carb and check them for any debris , or debris in tank.

check your tank vent, or when it starts to sputter loosen the fuel cap to allow air in to the tank

It could one of two things. Either it is ignition related or fuel related.

When it starts giving problems, try squinting a little fuel into carburetor throat If it picks back up then it most likely fuel problem and if it don't then it is ignition. In that case try a known good plug first and then coil. I have seen plugs give problem after getting hot.

Have you tried new spark plugs?

Yesterday had in an Intek V-Twin that had a slow surge and would die after running a few minutes.

Start up, runs good for about 5 seconds then starts surging slowly and then acts like it runs out of gas - it slowly dies out..

2 new spark plugs, and ran it for an hour with no problems.

What does that tell ya??? It tells me ya got a fuel issue, right? So, pull the carb. clean it , paying close attention to the solenoid valve ( if it has one). They've been known to act up. http://outdoorpowerinfo.com/repairs/briggs_walbro_lmt_carb.asp. As was mentioned, check the fuel hoses, and clean the fuel filter.

I had one stopping because movement of the key switch connector would cut current to the anti backfire solenoid
