6.5 Hp Yardworks mower with B&S Touch and Mow

Postby Pete in Milton » Wed Aug 20, 2014 7:55 pm

Hi,
I picked up a yardworks mower with a Briggs touch and mow system on it, Model 12H809 Type 1754B1, Ser 01051758.
I've done some research and this looks like a cool way to get these mowers to start, but it appears (from the literature available) that the starter is not serviceable?
I've just started into it and the unit will pop when I try to start it so I'm taking the flywheel off to check the key and way, busy with a cottage addition now so won't get to this for a week or so. The blade does not appear bent or to have struck anything on first examination. Any additional info or cross sectional diagram of how the starter is constructed? It may or may not be working , I'll find out when I can get it started with the pull start.
Thanks
Pete

Most of the parts are available but the end cap with brushes is not so if that is needed its a new starter.

Hi KE4AVB
This is not equipped with an electric starter, although it looks like one, I'll go out on a limb here and describe it as a kinetic starter. After the engine has started and you've finished mowing , or if you have to stop to pick up some debris that is in the way, when you release the safety bail it engages a rubber wheel that rides against the flywheel, this action stops the motor but also winds a spring in this starter, as you reengage the bail. you push a button which releases the energy in the starter, the drive engages and if the motor is in good tune , it starts!!! 695959 STARTER MECHANICAL

Ah I see its item 1236. I have seen one here. An expensive little bugger too. I hope there not many of those out there as I remember to old wind up starters that gave me nothing but trouble when I was a teenager.

Be very careful working on/around the "starter unit", the effiency they have at removing technician fingers played a part in their short production run.

Thanks Kyfarmer, I guess that's from inquisitive people trying to take the unit apart or is it from not deactivating the unit prior to working on it?????
