I have that control panel, but it acts as more as a 'barrier' to keep dust awwy from carb

Now that explains a lot. The carburetor your working with is not original equipment. The IPL shows a setup for a slide choke with auto engagement and the one you have is a butterfly version. It will take some digging to find what would be needed for the conversion if it has been done by Briggs before. I have ran into a throttle control setup like the one you have once with the slide choke setup but most have a control panel like the one I pictured earlier.

Just get a throttle panel and hook it to the choke. They make them that just screw to a handle bar.

The choke and throttle all seem to be connected

Somebody trimmed that with tin snips. But as KE4 mentioned, that carb does not belong to that engine model, so it has been jury rigged at some point in the past to fit up - But your carburetor set up with that butterfly , does require a separate choke control.

- I know of no way to convert those butterfly valve chokes to "Auto" choke (technically, semi-automatic wherein the throttle control is moved past a certain point which then engages the choke) - Have never seen one set up that way.
But your choke linkage you show in the earlier photos is to hook to a manually operated choke control, that should in theory mount in PLACE OF the above cover plate, which as I mentioned has been trimmed away, and is likely for the ORIGINAL engine, BUT the carburetor is NOT original to that engine, meaning that carburetor never had choke hooked up right to begin with.

Yea I knew the parts had been swapped last year, but the original owner seemed to get it running okay. Is there a cheaper carb I can throw in there that will work before I send it to a friend to hook up the linkage?

Why replace the carb instead of just buying an $8 lever and cable ????????????????

I still don't understand how this will help. It already has a cable and throttle by the handle bars which looks like a similar set up to what you pictured function wise

What he means is add on a second control just for the choke function

Alternatively, need to identify a similar engine that has a choke control and get one of those to replace the chopped up trim you pictured , and hook THAT up , voila choke works.

Those control assemblies are not too expensive and much cheaper than a new carb.
